Chris Malloy & Taylor Steele (40 mins.)

Words from the directors: "The whole thing feels like more of a movement than a surf film. We spent two months in the old farmhouse just living and surfing and making music. People like Nat young, George Greenough, Jim Banks and Ben Harper all passed through to share with our crew. To succeed with this film all we really hope to do is capture the feeling of what went on down there and to do justice to what everyone contributed."

Thirty hours of incredible footage have been cut down to highlight the surfing talents of Joel Tudor, Malia Jones, Nat Young, and many others. Featuring an original score by Joachim Cooder ("Buena Vista Social Club"). This is the new direction of surf films, and is NOT to be missed! For more info visit www.shelter2001.com.

WITH: The Quest (excerpt) by Mike Shaw and Scott Carter. (10 mins.) This is a STUNNING 10-minutes of footage from the upcoming Mike Shaw and Mike Stewart project titled "The Quest". Their footage is beautiful. All shot underwater, you'll feel the power of Teahupoo, and see the true momentum of waves. You will be blown away.

Untitled by King & Brostedt (8 mins.) The size of the average Super8 camera affords the operator a free form style to exploit the use of hand-held shots. This approach to capturing images often creates an organic and familiar tone. The familiarity of which infers a personal relationship between the filmmakers, the subject, and the viewers. Super 8 Motion Pictures would like to include you as part of this relationship: To share with you the situation of sight and sound; subject and matter.

Year of the Drag-In Year of the Drag-In
MavFilm (52 mins.)

The Maverick's winter of 1999-2000 will be known for three memorable days of big-wave surfing; three days that changed everything. On October 28, a handful of surfers took on the biggest waves ever ridden in California. On January 31 and February 2, their act was polished and refined. This is tow-in surfing at its mind-blowing best. Filmmakers Curt Myers and Eric Nelson team up with MavSurfer to capture Mavericks at 50-Feet plus!! Welcome to the Next Realm. For more info visit www.mavfilm.com

Eric Nelson, one of the directors, will be present at the 9:15 screening.

Cortes BankWITH: Cortes Bank (10 mins.) by Fran Battaglia. The Cortes Bank mini-movie is a no-budget, just-for-fun version of the expedition that turned heads in January 2001. You get on the Pacific Quest, you don't sleep, you lose an engine, you get there at dawn, you see Snips catch the biggest wave of his life and then you jump on a smaller boat to see some more up close and personal. Peter, Skindog, and Brad take it from there. All music by San Francisco's Zen Guerrilla.

Siestas & Olas Siestas & Olas
Dan Wozniak

The fun and freedom of a bare-footed surfing adventure comes alive with this beautifully crafted 16mm feature film by Dan Wozniak. These adventurers spend three months driving the entire coastline of Mexico from dusty Baja through the lush and tropical Mainland. They surf until the wind comes up or the swell dies out, then they move on in search of the next perfect place, taking in beautiful scenery and local cultures as they go. See Tom Wegener ride down gigantic waves three stories tall. Watch Josh Farberow noseride forever at a never-ending point. Meet the Australian shortboarder Marc Kavanagh, and see Joel Tudor have the tube riding session of his lifetime at Puerto Escondido's Mexican Pipeline. "The best surf movie adventure I've been taken on since Bruce Brown [The Endless Summer] was my travel agent back in 1964." -- Steve Pezman, "The Surfer's Journal."

WITH: This film will be preceded by a vintage 16mm short from 1970, courtesy of Oddball Film + Video of San Francisco.

The Seedling The Seedling
Thomas Campbell

Shot entirely on 16mm, this film is a documentation of a small pod of California "log riders." Beautiful photography, classic surfing, and a hypnotic soundtrack - featuring Tortoise, Friends of Dean Martinez, Tommy Guerrero, and much more make this film one of the best depictions of the state of modern longboard surfing.

The 9:15 screening on Friday, September 28th will feature a live performance by Tommy Guerrero! Tommy will be playing acoustic instumentals as you file into the theater, and for a bit during the show. Check here for more information, and to hear an mp3.

Thomas Campbell will also be present to introduce the film.

Indonesia Short Films: Bay Area and Beyond

Dos Gringos
Zack Hill & Scott Cherry (15 mins.) "Dos Gringos" was filmed on an extended road trip that began in northern California in October 1999, and ended in August 2000 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 7 countries and 15,000 miles of road with a good friend and his dog can equal many things. "Traveling as a gringo surfer can be both a humbling, as well as enlightening experience, and this film is just a scratch of some of the crazy experiences we had as we meandered through Mexico and Central America."

Vamos Izquierda
Vincente Lilla (12 mins.) Every trip to Mexico is different, but one constant is that the people make the trip. From examining the simplicity of surfing to the legend of the hammock, "Vamos Izquierda" explores various takes on the beauty that is Mexico. For more information, call Vincente Lilla at (510) 420-5735.

The Source
Georgina Corzine. (20 mins.) Through a combination of interviews, archival and live action footage, digital animation and original music, this surf adventure docu-drama follows hot surfer chicks, mermaids and the courageous women who relentlessly pursue that perfect curl.

S.F.O.B.
Aleks Petrovitch and Tim Ott (12 mins.) A short film about San Francisco's Ocean Beach surf and artist community. Classic interviews with people who never realized surfing was fun until they surfed somewhere besides OB.

Indonesia
Rick Charnoski. (8 mins.) From the director: "My 'Indonesia' Super8 film was an afterthought. I spent July/August in Indonesia last year, mostly surfing. But when I was travelling or when it was flat (2-3 ft), I shot a lot of random shit with my little waterproof Super8 camera. When I got home, I spent a couple of days putting together this little travelogue. It's by no means a 'surf film', but more just a collection of random images that sort of sum up what my day to day was like over there. It was shot in South Sumatra and West Java. The surfers are some randoms I met while surfing. (I never surfed with more than 5 or 6 people out) If you like to surf with huge crowds, go to Bali and fight it out with the Australians. Enjoy!"

They Will Surf Again Road Trip
Michael Sack. (10 mins.) A surf trip along the California Coast to raise awareness and funds for spinal cord injury research. Join the TWSA pros as they stop at select California coastal surf communities for expression sessions and miscellaneous good deeds. Including stops at the Rob Machado Surf Classic and the Rob Machado/Kelly Slater Surf and Turf Golf Tournament. Featuring Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, Jesse Billauer, Tim Curran, the Malloy brothers, Ross Williams, Laird Hamilton, Taj Burrow, Peter King, Anthony Petruso, Barney, Skindog, Anthony Ruffo, Adam Replogle, Mike Brummett, Peter Mel, Anthony Tashnick, Shane Dorian, Pat O'Connell, the TWSA pros-Seth Elmer, James Pribram, Doug Silva and many others. For more information, check the site at www.theywillsurfagain.com.

Two vintage shorts, "Surfing Thrills & Spills" from 1939, and "Surf Riders" from 1960. Both films are from Oddball Film + Video. (10 mins.)
